Teaser Trailers
A teaser trailer is a short trailer that advertises an upcoming movie.
Teaser trailers, unlike theatrical trailers, are 30-60 seconds long and normally don’t contain a lot of actual footage from the film (though sometimes it is simply a shortened version of the theatrical trailer). They are called teasers because they will come out around a year before the film’s opening weekend, so it teases the audience.
Teasers usually include a cryptic message or question that makes an audience want to know the answer. They are made more to tell the audience that this film will be coming soon then to give away the plot – though this rule usually stands only for big budget movies within a popular genre. They are used to gain ‘hype’ for the film and to start forming a fan base for it.
Two famous teaser trailers are ‘Star Wars Episode 1: The Phantom Menace’ (here) that was attached to the film ‘The Siege’ – it was reported that people paid admission to the film just to watch the teaser for Star Wars, and left after the trailer had screened – and the trailer for ‘Cloverfield’, (here) there was nothing known of the film at the time, and the teaser – that was over a minute long – didn’t have a title, and simply showed the producer’s name and the date.
Film Posters
This is a poster that advertises a film. There may be several different posters for one film, with variations to size, content and language. Old style film posters would have text describing the film, but nowadays posters are more likely to contain photographs and more visual content. The poster usually has the title of the film, a tagline and the release date. Some having a short cast list, the name of the producer or the director.
Film posters are usually found in cinemas, bus stops or on the side of a bus, or billboards. The same pictures will be used for DVD packaging and on websites.
Magazine Covers
Magazines are publications containing a variety of articles, in this case about the film industry. The front cover of the magazine needs to be able to appeal to its target audience, and make them want to buy it.
The name of the magazine, the date, price and barcode, and the main articles are usually displayed on the front cover, with a photograph relating to the main story in the background. Competitions and freebies are also shown on the front.
